My journey started with a fascination for these ancient structures, and over time, I have honed my skills to work with natural light and stone textures. Through my work, I aim to preserve and share the artistry and history of these temples, expanding my collection as I explore new sites.

I have a lot of passion for this art. I want to achieve that. I like to reveal the unknown through my photography. That’s why I photographed these Rock cut Temples. After that, our ancestors, the same people, the kings built the tenth century temple on the land. I have now begun to document it.

- Architecture has been traveling with me for years. I marveled at the remains of centuries-old buildings, temples, shrines and Rock Cut caves.

- After I started researching and documenting history, I realized how important history is here. My days never end without knowing history. I have a lot of passion for this art. I want to achieve that. I like to reveal the unknown through my photography. That's why I photographed these Rock cut Temples. After that, our ancestors, the same people, the kings built the tenth century temple on the land. I have now begun to document it.
Kudaivarai Temples
119 Cave Temples of Tamil Nadu – A Photographic DocumentationA "Cave Temple" refers to temples carved directly into natural rock formations. These are sculptural complexes carved into rocks, using only basic tools like chisels and hammers, with no advanced technological facilities. The carvings and sculptures created during these times stand as testimonies of the era and masterpieces of art.
Currently, 119 cave temples have been identified in Tamil Nadu. These temples were predominantly built by the Pallavas, Pandyas, and the smaller regional kings up until the 9th century. Each temple reflects the power of its respective rulers and the cultural aspects of the society during that period.
While searching for documentation on these cave temples online, I found that photographs were quite limited. At that point, the thought crossed my mind, "Why not capture and preserve these temples in photographs before they are lost to time?" Subsequently, I embarked on a journey to visit and photograph all 119 cave temples across Tamil Nadu, thus completing this massive project.
Each cave temple, when visited and felt within its rocky sanctum, filled me with awe and admiration for the sculptural artistry and engineering knowledge of our ancestors. Every temple stands as a symbol of tradition and as a voice of history.
My intention is to publish these photographic documents on a website. Through this, I hope that many more people will learn about these temples, and they will be regarded as important heritage sites that need preservation.
குடைவரைக் கோயில்கள்
தமிழ்நாட்டின் 119 குடைவரை கோவில்கள் – ஒரு புகைப்படப் பதிவாக"குடைவரை கோவில்" என்பதாவது, இயற்கையாக இருந்த பாறைகளை குடைந்து உருவாக்கப்பட்ட கோயில்கள். இவை இயற்கை பாறைகளில் நேரடியாக செதுக்கப்பட்ட சிற்பக்கலைக்கூடல்கள். தொழில்நுட்ப வசதிகள் எதுவும் இல்லாத அந்தக் காலக் கட்டத்தில், சுத்தி மற்றும் உளி மட்டுமே கொண்டு உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இந்தச் செப்பனிடல்களும் சிற்பங்களும் காலத்தின் தோற்றங்களாகவும் கலையின் கலைச்சான்றுகளாகவும் திகழ்கின்றன.
தமிழ்நாட்டில் தற்போது வரை 119 குடைவரை கோவில்கள் கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளன. இவை பெரும்பாலும் பல்லவர்கள், பாண்டியர்கள், மற்றும் குறுநில மன்னர்களால் 9-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு வரை கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு மன்னரின் ஆதிக்கத்தையும், அந்தக் காலச் சமூகத்தின் கலாச்சாரக் கூறுகளையும் வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன.
இந்தக் குடைவரைகளைப் பற்றிய ஆவணங்கள் இணையத்தில் தேடினபோது, புகைப்படங்கள் மிக குறைவாகவே கிடைத்தன. இதே நேரத்தில், “இவை அழிந்து போவதற்கு முன் நாமே புகைப்படமாக்கிக் காப்பாற்றக்கூடாதா?” என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றியது. இதன் பின், தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள அனைத்து 119 குடைவரைகளையும் நேரில் சென்று புகைப்படம் எடுத்தும், ஆவணப்படுத்தியும், இந்தப் பெரும் பணியை நிறைவு செய்துள்ளேன்.
ஒவ்வொரு குடைவரையும் பார்வையிட்டபோதும், மலைக்குள் சென்று அதை உணர்ந்தபோதும், நம் முன்னோர்களின் சிற்பக்கலை மற்றும் பொறியியல் அறிவுக்கு வியப்பும் ஆச்சரியமும் தோன்றியது. ஒவ்வொரு கோவிலும் ஓர் மரபின் சான்றாகவும், ஒரு வரலாற்றின் ஒலியாகவும் நின்றது.
இந்த புகைப்பட ஆவணங்களை இணையதளத்தில் வெளியிடுவது எனது நோக்கம். இதன் மூலம் இவற்றைப் பற்றி மேலும் பலர் அறிந்து கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பும், இவை பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டிய முக்கியத் தளங்களாக நினைக்கப்படவும் உண்டு.
10th AD Temples (கி.பி 10 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு கோயில்கள்)
The 10th century is an important period in the development of temple architecture in Tamil Nadu. These temples not only reflect the heritage of Tamil culture but also stand as exemplary models of ancient architecture on a global scale.
10ம் நூற்றாண்டு என்பது தமிழ்நாட்டின் கோயில் கட்டிடக்கலை வளர்ச்சியின் ஒரு முக்கிய காலப்பகுதியாகும். இந்த கோயில்கள் தமிழ்க் கலாசாரத்தின் பாரம்பரியத்தை மட்டும் அல்லாமல், உலக அளவிலும் தொன்மைமிக்க கட்டிடக்கலைக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாகத் திகழ்கின்றன.
